Some people these days might not have memories of a vaporizer being used in their home while growing up, but others do. While a vaporizer can be used in almost any climate for different reasons, where the flu and cold season hits really hard a lot of times is in colder weather climates and these areas are where you are likely to find these air moistening machines being used more often. They can be really comforting for people who are suffering from a number of different respiratory ailments. Anything from colds, flu, bronchitis, and sometimes even allergy symptoms can alleviated when a cool mist or steam version is used in a room with the ailing person.

Many of us can remember this little machine being used to moisten the air and sometimes it might have put out a weird smell in the air that was somehow pleasing to stuffed up sinuses. It smelled funny, but it made you feel better and sleep so much better during the night. This was a menthol smell that felt like it had a magical power to unclog the nose and throat and make it easier to breath when you were sick. When children would get a common childhood respiratory ailment called the croup, a parent could set up a vaporizer and it would help relieve the cough that sounds like a barking seal.

You can buy a vaporizer that is used for these ailments in almost in department store or pharmacy. They vary in price range, but normally even an inexpensive one will work well when they are cared for properly. It is a good idea to use distilled water in these machines because it will help to keep the vapors and mist mist flowing freely through the vents that disperse the moisture into the air. You can use the steam variety just because the warmth is so comforting, but it is thought that a cool mist is just as effective in some cases.

Even if you do not visit your doctor for a cold or the case of the flu, it might be a good idea to contact their office and ask if a the steam or cool mist might be helpful with your condition. This is especially true if you have a sick infant. Always follow the directions that come with your vaporizer very carefully and if you use steam, always keep the machine up where children will not be able to pull it down on them.. The water in a steam version can be very hot and cause some serious steam burns if this happens.
